Steve was a brilliant, if not conventional, teacher. His love for his subject shone through and his relationship with his pupils was firm but fair: his pupils knew exactly where they stood and he knew how to get the best out of them. He really was a one-off in his teaching style and classroom delivery. I’m sure he was instrumental in inspiring many students to go on to study History at a higher level. He had a great sense of humour and was a good mimic: my own children fondly remember his effective impersonations of Roland Rat! His distinctive laugh will be one of the many memories that will stay with me.
